Day of the Dead

The Day of the Dead is a special festival celebrated on November 1st and 2nd in Mexico, and in other countries that have a large Hispanic population.  During this festival, the dead are welcomed back as they visit the world of the living.  Families create altars in their homes and at the cemetery where they leave gifts and offerings of food, flowers, candles and special things their departed loved ones enjoyed while living.  At night, everyone gathers at the cemetery for music, dancing and other festivities.  Dancing, playing musical instruments, and smiling skeletons are often used in art work during the celebration of the Day of the Dead.
